The 6 inch trail marathon ( ultra) is a 48km event held from the town of North Dandalyup through to Dwellingyup in West Australia.

North Dandalyup is about an hour south of Perth ( main city) and is an easy spot to get too just along the South West Highway.
The run takes you along the Mundi Bidi mountain bike trail through to Dwellingyup with a climb along the trail of around 910m.

Starting at 4:30 am the North Dandalyup hall is check in. After the check in you are taken by buses to Goldmine hill 1.5kms away.

Goldmine hill is just that a hill and a fairly long one over 2 kms with a descent gradient. Few choose to run it , most took the opportunity to warm there legs up and walk it. I don't think you would have made ground running it compared to walking.

Usually at this time of the year in West Oz it is warm. In the previous 3 weekends there had been highs of over 38 degrees Celsius, but as a blessing a storm front was to head towards Perth and send us showers for the morning start, although this made the track a little muddy it was a blessing compared to the training I had been doing in the heat, and I am sure most felt the same. The rain however got into my phone and thus I couldn't get any shots.

The track is wide and undulating with thick bush either side. Most of the trail is pea gravel giving a good grip for most shoes with, with small amounts of single trail for the first half. The fun began in the second half where the hills became steeper and more single track was to be had. Then at 35kms came the hill know as the " escalator".

This thing was something on it's own. A 800m + steep and deeply rutted beast of a hill that made you question why? The hill was so deep with ruts it was like walking/ running on a balance beam that was slippery with mud. It was also a very fun and social part of the course. To be tackling this beast with other fellow runners and talking about how crazy it was broke the mindset of just running. The aid station at the top made it all that sweeter offering coke, red bull and fruits. You then had the joy to reverse and get down which had it's own issues and same fun.

The last 12kms saw a lot more single track and more slight up hills, heading into the town of Dwellingyup finishing on the main oval. A nice way to finish the event.

The 6 inch is a great run for a first time ultra competitor or for an experienced runner to blast out. If you are in West Australia at the time give it a go!You will have to get in early though because it sells out by about October, goes on sale around July. The guys who put it together are well organised and there are plenty of aid stations, with loads of friendly volunteers. The entry includes a sweet t shirt/ race number and medal worth keeping at the end.
