DIFFICULTY Race Difficulty Advanced

The Rooftop Run has been running since 1984 and has long been the measuring stick for Aussie trail and mountain runners.

Considered an advanced level race traversing remote backcountry, runners must be capable of looking after themselves and be confident following the unmarked course.

With over 3000 metres of elevation gain, there are 3 major climbs including the infamous Staircase Spur to the top of Mt Bogong.

A true alpine course, runners must be prepared for whiteout blizzards or sweltering heat, carrying mandatory kit and food and fluids.

The course record has stood since 1996 despite upgrades to the trail and every year the best Aussie runners come back to try and steal a little bit of history and claim that prize.

No glitz, no glam, no medals. Just pure grass roots trail running with brutal climbing and descending and tight cut-offs that mean many won't make the finish on the summit of Mt Hotham.

But they keep coming back, such is the lure of this jewel in the mountain running calendar.

Not one for the feint hearted. Can you make the cut?
