YOUR RATING
DIFFICULTY Intermediate
A rocky, slow, difficult and demanding trail run in Gambrill State Park (Maryland, USA) in very hot temperatures and humidity, almost entirely covered with tree foliage and with some stream crossings. The trail is not marked and the organisation does not provide maps but all course questions will be answered at the pre-race briefing.
All 175 runners must carry a minimum quantity of water, two bottles, to guarantee finishing the race. Equipment checks will be carried out prior to the start of the race. No crews, pacers or walking poles are allowed.
There are six aid stations along the route plus the start/finish area points fully stocked with water and snacks. There are partial cut off times at each checkpoint and a global cut off of 9 hours. There is a post-race barbecue.

2016 Cat 50 was advertized to me by friends as one of the, if not the, most difficult trail run on the East Coast, and I believe it! If you love a challenge of a physically and mentally grueling race, this is the one for you. The terrain was ridiculous at times, but it adds to the challenge and will make all other "normal" trails seem wimpy. The volunteers are crazy great and I will carry my Cat 50 card with pride. @UDhydrates (30L) was a must due to high temp, but plenty of calories are available at aid stations. I'll run it again and relish the moment that I cross the duct tape finish line! See you in 2017.
2015 Catoctin 50K -- The Beast in the East I have started, stopped, erased, started, forgot, been reminded to complete and now finished this race recap over the past month or so. It's a complicated one that would be far too long to hold anyone's interest, if I truly did justice to all the twists (paths and ankles) and turns of this race. So, stay with me as best you can . . .For the full review, visit my blog--http://only26point2.blogspot.com/2015/08/catoctin-50k-beast-in-east.html
