Wow is the first thing I would say. I am unsure you will get two more different race experiences. In 2016 this event was nothing short of brutal largely because of the conditions. So much so that returners from 2016 got a round of applause in the briefing!!. I was glad I can back as 2017 was a stunning. The race is no frills but with everything you could need. Good hydration stops meaning no need to carry a bladder. Easy carry water bottles seem a small detail but they make a big difference.
Even with a pleasant day the course is tough and from the 26 mile mark the climbs are energy soaking. The experience is worth it and regardless of how you find different the climate it is a superb event. I would highly recommend.

Well organised road run through a very beautiful rural part of Ireland. Pretty flat (max elevation 400ft) and water stations every 3-5 miles, with the option to store your own nutrition at 2 points along the way, and portaloos along the route. All on tarmac so a good option for those going for a quick run. Timed 6 weeks before the South African Comrades so would be an excellent last training race option. Note that just the last 13 miles is blocked to traffic, the first 26 miles is run on open, albeit relatively quiet, roads. We were lucky in 2017 with beautiful weather, the previous year had a high number of DNFs from the terrible weather. Starting times are very late in the day: 8:15 briefing and 9am start for the ultra through to 12am start for the half. Easy race bib pick up the day before. Lots of coaches transferring runners to and from the start and finish line to local transport hubs (Galway, Oughterard, Clifden) and secure bag storage. At €70 it is expensive but overall a recommended road race.

Very well organised event. Remote, hilly, this year extreme weather conditions made this race very tough to finish. In better weather, the views are spectacular throughout the race. Would strongly recommend

Well organised, no frills. A tough course for my first Ultra distance. The last 13 miles are a real challenge. Weather in this year's race was the best Connemara could throw at us. Wind, hail and lots of rain. I think the 2 star difficulty level is harsh and undermines how tough Connemara can be when she blows!
Not full marks as the remoteness of the location makes it harder to mix with fellow runners pre event. Would recommend to all!!
