This is an incredibly well run event, watched some friends run this and it has inspired me to train towards racing here myself. Incredible experience

This was my very first 50K distance race, I've ran dozens of 50K races since then, but this is still one of my favorites. Here is my full rece recap of the Durby 50K -> http://nathanmaxwell.net/2012/11/race-recap-first-ultra-marathon-derby-50k/

The Derby 50k has been put on by the Magnum Track Club in the rural backroads of Ellerbe, NC for the past 13 years. I have run this event the past 5 years (2011-2015) as it has become my post Thanksgiving tradition to run this event every Saturday after Thanksgiving. What better way to burn off all the calories consumed during the holiday. The Derby 50k is a very runnable for anyone looking to run their 1st ultra. It consists of 3 loops of 10.5 miles run mostly on paved roads with one dirt road section of about 1 mile. There are fair amount of hills on the course mainly in the 1st part of each loop. There are plenty of nice runnable sections. I have actually run my 50k PR at this event. There is no official cut off time and the race director is willing to stay until all runners/walkers are finished. That's right! It is walker friendly. For the price of this event $35 ($25 for MTC members), I would say give this event a try. I love the small time family feel of this event as I am a member of the track club and know many of the runners that participate each year. It is like a family reunion for me. Each finisher receives a nice finisher's medal and is treated to a spaghetti lunch by the church ladies in the community building where the event is held. This meal is highlighted by the homemade banana pudding for dessert. For those who keep coming back: 5 year finishers receive a 5 year vest and 10 year finisher's receive and stadium chair (and free registration for life as long as the current RD continues his duties as director). He uses old school registration so you need to print off your registration form at: http://www.etinternet.net/~runrbike/derbyinfo.htm. Hope this helps you decide to try out this wonderful event and if so, I'll see you there!
