In response to the rapid increase in the number of runners who are choosing to increase their competitive running distances the organisers of the Hever Castle Triathlon, the UK’s second largest triathlon event, have created a 50 mile run route that will be an excellent addition to their already busy Festival of Endurance. 

The event, due to take place over the weekend of 3rd/4th July, is open to all runners/ walkers over the age of 18 who can make the distance inside of the cut off time of 17 hours.

Fully supported with 6 stocked feed stations, some strategically placed at award winning pubs, and encouraging event marshals, friends and locals will help keep your spirits up as you conquer this epic ultra run. All athletes will be issued with a GPS tracker that will also act as their timing device. This will allow both organisers and supporters alike to monitor their progress along the route allowing for unparalleled supporting opportunities in arguably some of the most stunning countryside the UK has to offer.

This is a beautiful, hilly, point to point, mostly off-road 50 miler that takes in the Race Director’s 2 main training grounds for ultra running, the South Downs and The Ashdown Forest. Planned and executed last summer the Race Director completed the course in 11 hours and 37 minutes with his 17 year old son and lockdown training partner.

Starting at 6.00am at Eastbourne Pier the first 10 miles takes in the start of the official South Downs Way (SDW) passing Beachy Head and the rolling Seven Sisters. From Cuckmere Haven (1st Feed Station), runners will head north following the course of the Cuckmere River until they get to Alfriston and then head up onto the SDW for a further 5 miles until, at the Firle Beacon Radio Masts, dropping down to the village of Firle and the Ram Inn (2nd Feed Station).

From Glynde (20 miles in) competitors will head north until they get to the edge of the Glyndebourne estate and then head north-west on a series of footpaths which end up at Barcombe Mills and the River Ouse. Runners then follow the Sussex Ouse Valley Way for a further 5 miles before making The Anchor Inn (3rd Feed Station) and then, after a series of well marked public footpaths, the Griffin Inn in Fletching (31 miles, 4th feed station).

Heading north out of the village before taking bridle paths to the foothills of the Ashdown Forest at Cackle Street runners make their way to the high point of the forest at Bushy Willows Car Park (37 miles). The 5th Feed Station is at Black Hill Car Park.

The descent from the forest brings you through stunning countryside with a 6th Feed Station by Blackham Church and the home run though the village of Chiddingstone and on to Hever Estate for a grand stand finish beside the glorious Hever Castle (complete with portcullis).

Ticket price includes a Hever camping pitch for 2, shuttle from Hever to Eastbourne, fully supported feed stations, hot food on completion with a brew of Timothy Taylor Landlord or glass of fizz and of course your finisher T’shirt and medal!

Beginner

Elevation: Very little change < 500 metres. Benign running terrain, not technical.

Suitable for: First ultra runners completing a marathon or doing regular long distance running in the last six months.

Intermediate

Elevation: Increase of up to 1000 metres

Suitable for: Runners who have completed at least one ultra distance race (or similar event) or are doing long distance running (>26 miles) regularly, with elevation shown.

Advanced

Elevation: Increase of up to 1500 metres

Suitable for: Runners who have completed several ultra distances or similar events, or are doing long distance running regularly, with elevation shown.

Expert

Elevation: Increase of up to 2000 metres with some challenging climatic conditions (e.g. ice, snow, humidity or heat) and or technical terrain

Suitable for: Experienced runners who have completed at least regular ultra distances in last 12 months, or are doing regular long distance running (>50 miles) with elevation and conditions shown (where possible). Admission to these races may be subject to evidence of recent qualifying race participation and recent medical examination certificate. Check with the race organiser regarding entry requirements.

Brutal

Elevation: Increase of up to 2000 metres with very challenging climatic conditions (e.g. ice, snow, humidity, heat or at high altitude) and or technical terrain.

Suitable for: Very experienced long distance ultra runners (min 3 years’ experience) or are doing regular long distance running (>50 miles) with elevation and conditions shown (where possible). Admission to these races is often subject to evidence of recent qualifying race participation and recent medical examination certificate. Purchase of specialist kit is often recommended for these races.

Endurance - Multi-activity

Type: An ultra distance race including at least two of the following activities such as running, swimming, cycling, kayaking, skiing and climbing. It may also include different climatic conditions (eg ice, snow, humidity, cold water, mud or heat).

Suitable for: Experienced multi-skilled athletes who have trained for the different activities included in this event. Admission to these races may be subject to receipt of a recent medical examination certificate. Check with the race organiser regarding entry requirements and any specialist equipment required such as a wetsuit, skis or a mountain bike.

Global - Virtual

Type: A virtual race which can be run at any time shown on the dates shown, on any type of terrain in any country.

Suitable for: For runners from beginners to experienced as you choose your own course and challenge based on the guidelines and options set by the virtual race organiser.
