DIFFICULTY Race Difficulty Brutal

An ultrarunning adventure, following in the footsteps of WWII's finest military operation. Greece's toughest mixed-terrain ultra returns for its second edition, offering a select group of runners the chance to take on the escape route of the 1944 abduction of General Kreipe through the incredible island of Crete and experience the amazing hospitality and spectacular beauty of the island.

The Kreipe abduction

On the night of 26 April 1944, British (SOE) agents and Cretan resistance fighters risk the unthinkable: the abduction of the commander of Nazi occupation forces in Crete, General Heinrich Kreipe, from right under the noses of the Germans. Disguised as German military policemen, they stopped the General's car on its way from military HQ to his private residence.

One of the most legendary operations of World War II begins.

Over the next 20 days, the team moves through rough mountainous terrain under the vail of darkness, pursued by 30,000 enemy troops. They haul their victim over snow-covered Mt Ida, through olive groves and goat trails to the evacuation beach at Peristeres.

Heroes Ultra is their escape route through the stunning mountain ranges of central Crete.

Route Description

Distance: 156.2 km | Elev. Gain: 5,500m | Time Limit: 30 hours | UTMB Pts: 6 | ITRA Mountain Level: 4 | ITRA Finisher Level: 450

Heroes Ultra crosses the island of Crete from North to South, taking in a wide range of spectacular scenery.

The race starts at daybreak at Vosakou, a 17th century Monastery nestled in the Tallaia Mountains. It then heads towards Mt Ida (Psiloritis) crossing over the snow-covered Akolyta pass at an altitude of 1,920m before winding down the Amari valley towards Mt Kedros.

In the Amari, the course takes runners through a number of villages on the slopes of Mt Kedros, then heads west through olive-grove country before veering south towards the coast.

The course finishes at the beautiful beach of Peristeres where weary runners can take a dive or enjoy a warming shot of raki with their hot meal.
