The Kilimanjaro Stage Run combines authentic off-the-beaten-path travel and exploration with organized supported running, and the goal of a complete circumnavigation of Mount Kilimanjaro in beautiful Tanzania, East Africa.

Ultrarunner Simon Mtuy and his team at Summit Expeditions & Nomadic Experience created this fully catered running adventure vacation to immerse you in the local cultures in this remote and scenic location while safely experiencing the footpaths of lower Kilimanjaro on a physically challenging activity.

More than just another run, the Kilimanjaro Stage Run is a multi-day adventure run (not a race) open to all runners willing to test their endurance covering 260 kilometers over 8 days at a moderate pace, while challenging their strength with more than 10,000 meters total elevation gain.  The terrain is technical and all running is done between 1500 and 2200 meters elevation, and only during the day.  Runners are divided into groups by pace and always run with a Tanzanian running guide.

I ran the Kilimanjaro Stage Run in 2012 and 2014. It is an absolutely amazing adventure. The terrain is challenging and breathtaking. This is true cultural immersion into areas that have had little to no contact with Westerners. This is a chance to see the real Tanzania. Simon Mtuy is not only a talented athlete, he is also a great leader with an incredible personality and a great sense of humor. This is an opportunity to run in one of the most amazing places on the planet with a very small group. All of the guides are Tanzanians, from the Kilimanjaro area. I highly recommend this event and also suggest staying at least a few days longer to enjoy an animal safari with one of Simon's knowledgeable safari guides. Oh yeah, and the food is amazing! Definitely 5 stars!

I was involved in the inaugural event and the memories and experiences will stay with me forever. To see this wonderful landscape and meet the amazing humble communities that live on the slopes all whilst running some of the most fun and technical trails is a true gift. Africa really is a magical place and this run will help you cut through all of the tourist traps and experience this genuine magic first hand.
