2016The Rhodes Run is a highlight on the ultra running calendar in South Africa and for most trailies, their best chance to see snow and run in sub-zero temperatures. The race is made all that more special because it's limited to a number of runners, most of whom are returners each year. I was lucky enough to get a Wildcard entry in 2016 and prepared for an exciting adventure (and my first ultra!).The race is really well organised with feed stations and water tables manned by the local townspeople along the way. Every delicious treat imaginable is available along the way. And after the huge climb up Mavis Bank, you reach a well-stocked feed station that even has Sherry for those suffering from the cold. The route traverses the border of South Africa and Lesotho with beautiful views to distract you from the quad-busting downhill from the Afriski resort. This is a must-do for anyone keen on ultra distances in cold weather!
