RRR is certainly not the best looking ultra, but this was the first ultra I did, and even after returning 4 years later to race it again, it will always have a place on my heart. It has a very humbling feel to it, it's great value for money and the CPs are some of the best filled tables I've ever seen at races.

2014 - RR50 is a long established ultra. It may not sound that attractive - running around Rotherham (near to Sheffield) but the food and friendly organisers certainty makes up for it. I have never known checkpoints so full of goodies, lots of cake, sandwiches and even tea and coffee and proper loos as some of the checkpoints are inside village halls.

RR50 is open to walkers, slow runners and faster runners starting at different times. The route is primarily 'easy' trail, taking in some of the Trans Pennine Trail and Rother Valley Country Park. There are also some more tricky farmers fields to negotiate further 'afield'. A relay takes place at the same time so don't be surprised if super fast runners come zomming past you half way around.

It is quite picturesque for Rotherham and more or less stays on the trails. The route is relatively flat with one hill towards the end. GPX files and 'strip maps' are provided for the course along side written instructions. The organisers go out of their way to provide as much information up front as they can. At the end there is a plethora of free food including pies and rice pudding.

A technical tee shirt, badge and certificate make up the 'bling' for this event. It is quite a 'large' ultra with over 300 runners. For £13 entry in advance or £18 entry on the day there is no reason not to attempt this flattish and very yummy 50 miler.
