The Salt Flats 100 Mile race starts each year at 7:00AM on the Bonneville Speedway and runs out the famous Bonneville Speedway to join the roads and trails that traverse the "islands"... mountains that seem to float on the Salt Flats.

You'll cross the infamous "Hastings Cutoff" trail that the Donner Party followed on their fateful journey to California.

The Event

The event starts with 17 miles on the actual Salt Flats, running the same course where the land-speed records are set and transitions onto the jeep roads and trails that take the runner up and over the mountains, and out to the extremely remote "Crater Island" section of the course.

Runners will spend several miles running through the lunar landscape and mud-flats where extremely few humans have ever set foot. The course ascends four different mountain passes providing amazing views of the surrounding desert landscape, and passes into the State of Nevada before returning to Utah and the finish.

There is a 36 hour cutoff for an official finish, and all finishers making the cutoff receive a finishers belt buckle.

Salt Flats 100 was my first 100 and what an experience! The weather was cloudy and breezy at the start but by 4pm it was a serious wind storm followed by rain, hail and snow. Most of the runners chose to drop out, but the aid stations were well maned and happy to see the few "crazies" like me who gutted it out. The Race Director was very attentive and even had to quickly alter the final 5 miles (as there was over 2 feet of standing water by the finish). Instead of cancelling the 50 miler that morning, the aid stations and staff jumped into action changed the course slightly and briefed the runners, all this while still paying close attention to the few of us remaining 100 milers out on the course. It was epic, cold, wet, and I wouldn't change a thing! Thanks Vince and all the Volunteers. I'm proud to say I finished the Salt Flats 100!

This was my first 100 and I loved it! The unique landscape of the Salt Flats alone is a reason to come out. Some of the flats contribute to speed while other areas provide resistance. The mountainous terrain is the same found elsewhere in Utah, but the flats seen from the small mountains make for scenic views and an awesome sunset. The Race Director does a fantastic job and the aid stations are superb.
