Leadville Trail 100 Run
In 1983, Lake County, Colorado had the highest unemployment rate in the USA following the 1982 closure of Climax Mine. The Leadville race series was Ken and Merille Chlouber's response to help the Leadville community get back on its feet. Today, the Leadville race series continues to support the community with a proportion of the entry fees (as well as charitable donations) going towards community projects via the Legacy Foundation and towards a $1000 scholarship for every local high school graduate going onto college.

The route for the 100 mile trail race has changed 6 times since 2008, and this year sees a return to the route last run in 2012 when it was by Thomas Lorblanchat (16:29:27) and Tina Lewis (19:33:43). Last year's winners were Ian Sharman (16:22:39) and Clare Gallagher (19:00:27). Sharman returns to defend his crown in this year's race. Finishers who complete the course within 25 hours will receive a gold and silver trophy buckle and those finishing between 25 and 30 hours receive a silver buckle.

The course is run through the Colorado Rockies on forest trails and mountain roads. The highest point is Hope Pass (12,600 feet). The 500 runners set off at 4am on Saturday 19th August (11am UK time) and they can expect huge variations in weather. This area can see temperatures in the mid to high twenties during the day and still reach freezing overnight at high altitudes.

Keep your eye on this thread and our twitter account for updates over the weekend. Let us know if you have experience of this race or know anyone running it this year.

RE:Leadville Trail 100 Run
Simona Morbelli has just come through the Hope Pass (45 mile) aid station as first lady meaning she has overtaken Camille Heron who was first to the 39.5 mile Twin Lakes aid station. Camille is in third with Devon Yanko third lady at the Twin Lakes aid station.

In the men's field, Anthony Kunkel was first to Hope Pass in 6:54:31 with last year's winner, Ian Sharman, in second at 7:02:09. Tyler Green was third in 7:28:06.

RE:Leadville Trail 100 Run
Current champion Ian Sharman has taken the lead and was forst through 60.5 miles in 10:32:03 with Anthony Kunkel in second in 11:00:56 and Michael Hewitt third in 11:31:55.

I suspect there are some tracker issues as Simona Morbelli and Camille Heron have not shown up for a while on the live results. According to the data, Devon Yanko was first lady to 55 miles in 11:27:07 followed by Christy Burns in 11:44:25.

RE:Leadville Trail 100 Run
Simona Morbelli has reappeared on the tracker and was second lady to 60.5 miles in 12:41:16 - just 8 minutes behind first lady Devon Yanko. Christy Burns was third in 13:03:47. Still no sign of Camille Heron on the live results.

In the men's field, Anthony Kunkel appears to be beginning to struggle and had dropped back to fourth place at 69 miles. Ian Sharman was first though in 12:08:39 with a strong lead over David Teirney (12:59:07) and Michael Hewitt (13:11:17).
