Back Country Cuisine: Alps 2 Ocean Ultra
Alps 2 Ocean is a new race and New Zealand's first staged ultra. It starts tomorrow (Sunday 25th NZ time) at the foot of Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain, and finishes on 3rd March in Oamaru on the Pacific Coast. The route is 316km or 187 miles divided into 7 stages. There are 3 categories - supported, unsupported and teams (4 people). The aim is to challenge the hardiest runners in the supported category whilst allowing runners of all levels to experience this stunning route with support (their kit will be carried). The competitors - 126 runners - are currently in transit to the start. The route includes 8 lakes, valleys, rivers and mountain trails and proceeds will be put back into the local community.

Good luck to anyone taking part in this first edition - the photos of the route look incredible. It would be great to get some reviews to help other runners consider whether this is for them next year. The stages will be roughly as follows:

Day 1: Stage 1 - 6.03km
Stage 2 - 47.83km

Day 2: Stage 3 - 51.34km

Days 3 & 4: Stage 4 - 86.6km

Day 5: Stage 5 - 47.76km

Day 6: Stage 6 - 52.66km

Day 7: Stage 7 - 28.67km

RE:Back Country Cuisine: Alps 2 Ocean Ultra
Thanks to infonews.co.nz and John McKenzie for the updates on the race. The UK's Jane Ovington came into her own in the later stages of the event and was the fastest unsupported female overall. She came from being more than 2 hours off the lead after 4 stages to winning by 20 minutes over 7 stages. France's Florence Morisseau was a strong second, and New Zealand's Wendy Fallon was third.

The winners of the men's supported and men's unsupported categories crossed the line together to finish the final stage: James Kohler (Australia) was the fastest overall, and Brendon Thompson (NZ) was the fastest unsupported runner. Curly Jacobs (NZ) was the second unsupported male, and Garth Reader (USA) was third. Peter Kingston (Australia) was second in the supported category.

The female supported race was won by Sam Yarnold (Australia), who finished 47 minutes ahead of Toni Smith (NZ). Michelle Donnell was third.
