Race vests/packs- how many litres?
Hello all

I’m a total newbie and just starting to dabble in going long(er). I have a 100k race in September (Thames Path Challenge) and am starting to shop for a pack, but I don’t know how many litres to go for. I’ll need to carry water/trail snacks, something warm and something waterproof.

Is 10l too much or too little?

Thanks!

Hi Rosie,

I think 10 litres would be plenty unless there is a long mandatory kit list. If you only need to carry what you mentioned above, then 10 is fine. You could probably go slightly smaller if you wanted. If you live near anywhere that sells them, then I'd recommend going into the shop to try them and see. If not, then order online and check everything fits before you take the tags off or run in it.

Hi Rosie

12 litres for UTMB was enough and their mandatory kit list is OTT! so 10lt is a good bet and stops you overfilling a bag too!

I bought a 12L one recently (my first vesty pack thing ever) and was amazed at how much fits in, even without any kind of compression bags for items such as a lightweight fleece. It's made a massive difference to my days out - I can run in it and hardly notice I'm wearing it!
A great investment, if pricey...
