Watches: GPS and HR with navigation.
Hi All,

Looking for a running watch with integrated heart rate and GPS. The catch is, I want to be able to download GPX files of pre-designed routes - which I know is possible - and for wrist/display based navigation. On some of the Garmin models I'm told the route shows up as a wiggly line which won't be good enough. What I'm after is something like a sat nav that will give me a turn indication on the display. Do these even exist?

Let's pretend money's no object, for the sake of discussion, but actually would like to be sub £200.

I'm looking at the TomTom Runner Cardio 2 or 3, as I think these might do it, but I've not been able to confirm thus far. (Interested in experienced opinions on the Tomtom range in general. Robust? Any good?) Happy to look at other suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

I would look for an Ambit 2 or 3 on EBay mate. I got my Ambit 3 vertical for £180 and you can download routes etc!

Realise this is a ridiculously late reply lol.

I have the Fenix 3, which you can pick up second hand by now for roughly the money you are looking to spend.

I have accidently done what you are looking for - wiggly line and then it vibrated and showed an arrow for each turn.It wasn't for me as I just set an alert if I wander 100m off course as my way of avoidn getting lost

Video example here - showing it working at 9min-ish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EufR_zRqhU4

Tomtom - no idea about them, I am kind of locked into Gamin now since the Forerunner 305 so stuck with their positives & negatives

I have the TomTom Runner Cardio (with MP4 player and HR too).
It doesn't give directions or have routes to follow, as far as I know. It simply allows you to download after recording a run the route you have followed.

Having had this watch for over a year now, it's great at recording info but also quite basic.

I have the Suunto Ambit Peak 3 and the navigation works well for me - I am hopeless with directions but I can use it with ease. It shows up as a line with an arrow and a zoomed out version showing a figure of the whole route. It warns you if you have gone off route. It isn't the same kind of display as a satnav but it does the job.
