Triathlon to Ultra
Hello All!

This year is basically targeted towards 70.3 half Ironman triathlons with various running events dotted about throughout the year but nothing over 26miles.

My question is - Do you think 8 weeks is enough transition time from triathlon to Ultra? My initial idea is to take a weeks recovery following my last triathlon on the 23rd of September and then train soley (excuse the pun) on running for a 50mile ultra on the 17th of November... Realistic or not?

I am confident in my running ability but I'm a little unsure whether I'll be able to get enough miles in without risking injury. What do you think?

Im in a similar boat to you H31

I'm doing the Manchester Marathon in April, Cotswold 113 in Jun and have just signed up to the Chiltern Challenge 50km in July!

Would be interesting to hear peoples thoughts to your question

RE:Triathlon to Ultra
From experience an 8 weeks gap you only have 2-5 weeks of meaningful training in the middle and lose the other days in anywhere from 2-4 weeks recovery (assuming no injuries) and 1-2 weeks tapering down to the next race.

If you are already fit and able, then this shouldn't be a big issue. I have a road marathon in March and an ultra at the end of May with the only change I need to make is more trail running and slightly longer training runs as they compliment each other with speed, hill work and strength training.

I have run 4 races straight into each other over 4-5 months and you find yourself slowing down in the later races as you haven't fully recovered and/or properly addressed any issues/strength issues. I don't think I ran for 2 months after the last one - I was a broken man!
