Montane Lakeland 50/100 2018
These races are two of the most popular and quickest to sell out ultras in the UK. The Lakeland 100 starts at 6pm on Friday, and runners have up to 40 hours to complete the route - considerably longer than the cut-off for many other 100 milers, and this reflects the difficulty of the terrain and navigation. The DNF rate is typically 50-60%, and the 105 mile route contains 22,493 feet of ascent. It is a circular route starting and finishing in Coniston. It weaves across the whole of the Lake District feels, but takes runners on less well-travelled paths, avoiding the summits most popular with tourists. Last year's winner, Michael Jones, beat his own winning time from the previous year and finished in 20:22:29. Sabrina Verjee was the winner of the women's race, having won the Lakeland 50 the year before.

The Lakeland 50 starts at 11:30am on Saturday in Ullswater, and runners have 24 hours to get to the finish in Coniston. Couple Caspar and Katie Kaars Sijpesteijn were first male and first female, with Katie finishing 3rd overall.

The heat could make this year's events especially tough. Good luck to all those involved.
