Lakeland 50/100 (UTLD)
This weekend will see runners attempting to complete both the Montane Lakeland 50 and the Montane Lakeland 100 (Ultra Tour of the Lake District/UTLD). These events are both incredibly popular and incredibly tough. They sell out in minutes with those with the fastest fingers getting a place. Around 50-60% of those attempting the 100 tend to DNF. This highlights the difficulty of the terrain and the level of navigation involved. However, all of our reviewers have given the races 4 or 5 stars and the finisher's medal is one of the most coveted in UK ultra running.

The Lakeland 100 kicks off at 6pm on Friday and there is a 40 hour time limit. Last year's winners completed the course in 20:30:03 (Michael Jones) and 21:29:36 (Beth Pascall). The race starts and finishes in Coniston and encompasses the whole of the Lakeland fells. The route is actually 105 miles with a quad-busting 22493 feet of ascent.

The Lakeland 50 starts at 11:30 am on Saturday at the Dalemain Estate in Ullswater. The time limit is 24 hours. Last year's winners were Jayson Cavill (7:38:48) and Sabrina Verjee (8:54:39). The 50 mile route has 9728 feet of ascent.

If you have entered either event this year, how are you feeling as the weekend approaches? If you have run one of the Lakeland races before, do you have any last-minute tips for this year's runners?

Good luck to everyone involved.

RE:Lakeland 50/100 (UTLD)
With just over an hour until the Lakeland 50 runners set off, the Lakeland 100 leaderboard is looking exciting. Last year's winner Michael Jones is currently leading but second placed Marcis Gubats is only 14 minutes behind him. James Elson is in third place. In the women's field, the winner of last year's Lakeland 50, Sabrina Verjee, is in the lead and sixth overall. She has a 50 minute lead over second placed Charlie Ramsdale. Wendy Chapman is currently third and around 90 minutes off the lead.

The Lakeland 50 mile runners are just setting off (11.30). The top 3 men and women in the 100 remain as above with Michael Jones the only runner so far through checkpoint 12.

Michael Jones has defended his 100 crown and beaten last year's time. His winning time is 20:22:29. Marcis Gubats was second in 20:52:35. Tony Maxwell is currently running in third. Sabrina Verjee looks set for a strong win and remains sixth overall. Some fantastic performances!
