OMM Original Mountain Marathon
Regarded as the original adventure race, the OMM mountain marathon takes place every October in a location that is kept secret until August. This is the race's 50th anniversary year and the location is Langdale in the Lake District. There will be seven different course options and runners compete as teams of two: the 'elite' course attracts professional athletes from around the world and is the only civilian event to be approved as a training opportunity for the British armed forces. This year, the elite course is around 85km with 4000m of ascent. The other distance options are 65km and 45km. For these three courses, the winning team is the fastest one to go through all of the checkpoints over the two days (28th and 29th October). There are also three score based courses in which teams have a time limit (long, medium or short) in which to reach as many checkpoints as possible. There is also a combined course in which the winning team is the fastest one to reach a set number of checkpoints (half of which are compulsory and the other half of which can be chosen from the remaining options) over 45km.

Previous mountain experience is essential for these races - they combine fell running, orienteering, hill walking, trail running and an overnight wild camp. Entrants must be self-sufficient and navigate their way to the checkpoints without using GPS devices. This event sounds like it would appeal to those with a sense of adventure, a desire for something different and the confidence to survive in the mountains. It would be really interesting to hear from people who have taken part in this event in the past and are able to offer tips to future entrants. You can leave us a review here: https://www.runultra.co.uk/Events/OMM-Original-Mountain-Marathon#reviewSection

To give you some idea of the calibre of the elite teams, here a just a few that are tipped to do well:

Last year's winners Duncan Archer and Shan Ohly; Nicholas Barber and Jim Mann - 2nd in both 2015 and 2016 and Jim completed a Paddy Buckley, Ramsey and Bob Graham Round all within a month earlier this year; Nicky Spinks and Kirsty Hewiston (the only all-female team this year).

Good luck if you are taking part in any of the courses and let us know how you get on.

RE:OMM Original Mountain Marathon
Well done to all of this year's teams. All competitors were accounted for by 4pm this afternoon. After challenging conditions yesterday, today was a surprisingly clear day in the Lake District. Last year's winners claimed the elite crown again with a total time over the two days of 14:19:36. These were the top 3 men's teams:

Shane Ohly and Duncan Archer - 14:19:36
Steve Birkinshaw and Andrew Berry - 14:42:08
Tom Gibbs and Paul Tierney - 15:06:49

Only one mixed team completed both days - many teams retired during or after day one, showing how tough the conditions were. Teams faced 60mph winds, limited visibility and heavy rain. Well done to the mixed team:

Kim Baxter and Dave Sykes (9th overall) - 18:33:52

No elite female teams finished the event. The provisional results for all the courses are available on www.theomm.com. It would be great to get some runner reviews of this event. If you took part, we would appreciate it if you could leave us a review: https://www.runultra.co.uk/Events/OMM-Original-Mountain-Marathon#reviewSection

Thank you
