Hardrock 100
In Silverton, Colorado just under 150 runners will set off on a 100 mile loop through the San Juan mountains at 6am tomorrow (1pm UK time). They will climb around 33000 feet including 13 passes in the 12000-13000ft range. This year's race is run counter-clockwise (it alternates direction each year) and finishers 'kiss the hardrock' rather than cross a finish line.

The cut-off is 48 hours, and average time on this course is over 41 hours which gives you some idea of how difficult the race is (many 100 mile races have a cut-off of 30 or 36 hours). The terrain includes technical descents, snow and river crossings and the altitude puts runners at risk of oedema and sickness. The course records are held by Kilian Jornet (22:41 in 2014) and Diana Finkel (27:18 in 2009). Last year, Jornet and Jason Schlarb made headlines when they finished hand-in-hand and shared the win. Anna Frost won for the second consecutive year. All three winners are back this year. Kilian is on great form after his record breaking Everest climbs but Frost has had a difficult year with a DNF at Ultra SkyMarathon Madeira.

Other contenders this year include Iker Karrera who won Tor des Geants in 2013, five time winner Karl Meltzer and Joe Grant who came second in 2012. In the women's field, Caroline Chaverot looks like a podium favourite after her Lavaredo win and Nathalie Mauclair (2nd in MdS) could do well.

Keep an eye on this thread and our twitter account for race updates.

RE:Hardrock 100
The fabulous iRunFar reporters are out at Maggie Gulch (15.3 miles) and reporting that Iker Karrera and Kilian Jornet were running together in first place. Next in was Caroline Chaverot as first lady. Great to see a female runner in the top 3 - she is having a fantastic year. Current third male is Mike Foote, followed by Joe Grant and Chris Price.

Last year's joint champion Jason Schlarb was reported to have stomach issues early in the race and has now dropped. Hannah Green and Anna Frost are 2nd and 3rd lady through mile 15.

Conditions are tough with a hailstorm and lightning at Grizzly Gulch (35th mile). Jornet and Karrera continue to share the lead with Foote 8 minutes behind. Caroline Chaverot is in fifth overall and maintaining a strong lead in the women's field.

The field at the mile 40 point:

MEN

Kilian has run ahead of Iker Karrera with a 2 minute lead despite a shoulder injury meaning he is using only one pole! Incredible running yet again and he's currently 8 minutes under CR pace. Foote is 8 minutes behind in third. Joe Grant is fourth.

WOMEN

Caroline Chaverot is leading and fifth overall. No other women yet at 40 miles but Anna Frost is second lady and Darcy Piceu currently third.

RE:Hardrock 100
Anna Frost now 3rd lady through the 42 mile aid station. She's having a tough day, but if anyone has the mental strength to stick this out, then it's her. Hannah Green looking strong in second.

Eleven hours in and Kilian and Iker Karrera are running together again. Kilian had a dislocated shoulder and there are reports that Karrera has some stomach issues, but they are running strong with a 5 minute lead on Mike Foote in third. Hannah Green, Anna Frost and Darcy Piceu (2nd-4th women) are close together but all are over an hour behind Caroline Chaverot.

RE:Hardrock 100
It's all change as Karrera begins to struggle and Kilian comes into the Ouray aid station alongside Joe Grant in 12 hours 14. Grant was first out of the aid station while Kilian was having his shoulder retaped. Kilian is second, Foote third and Karrera fourth into Ouray. Caroline Chaverot was next in and only 13 minutes behind the overall leader - she is storming it and left ahead of Karrera, putting her in fourth overall.

RE:Hardrock 100
The action from the last 8 hours:

Iker Karrera spent an hour and 25 minutes in Ouray aid station but got going again. By 64 miles, Kilian and Mike Foote were running together in the lead with Kilian looking strong despite the sling. Joe Grant was three minutes behind.

Hannah Green was beginning to struggle and was passed in Ouray aid station. Caroline Chaverot remained 19 minutes ahead of CR pace at 67.5 miles.

At 73 miles, Joe Grant was leading with Kilian in third (behind Mike Foote) after calmly getting his shoulder rebandaged and adding to speculation that he is superhuman!

Caroline Chaverot went off-course for over an hour after Krogers aid station and took a fall but didn't lose her lead. She was reported to be frustrated and disappointed.

At 20 hours in, Darcy Piceu was second lady and running without a pacer. Anna Frost was in third coming into Telluride but was passed by Nathalie Mauclair at the aid station. Kilian was back in the lead coming into Chapman aid station (82.4 miles) but left the aid station 1 minute behind Foote. Lots of leapfrogging at the tope is making for an exciting race!
