The Berlin Wall Race (Mauerweglauf)
On Saturday, around 350 runners will follow the former course of the wall that divided East and West Germany. This 100 mile race commemorates those who lost their lives as a result of the separation, and the medals show a portrait of someone who died trying to defeat the barbed wire and concrete of the wall. Former GDR civil rights activist Rainer Eppelmann in a patron of the event.

The route is mainly flat and includes paved urban running, forests, meadows and fields. Competitors have up to 30 hours to complete the 100 miles, but the frontrunners are likely to be running for less than half that time. The male course record is held by British runner Markin Perkins, who completed the route in 13:06 in 2014. The female course record is held by Patricia Rolle who crossed the line in 15:57 in 2015. Those who finish in under 24 hours receive a buckle.

The course alternates direction each year - this year it is being run clockwise. Good luck to all the runners. We will be tracking and also thinking of those whom the race seeks to remember.
