Marathon des Sables 2018
According to The Discovery Channel, MdS is the toughest footrace on earth, and it's back for its 33rd edition. Starting in Merzonga, Morocco on Friday 8th April, over 1000 runners will aim to complete a 6 stage/7 day race across the Sahara. The route varies each year, but it is approximately 250km/156 miles. The long stage is usually at least 80km/50 miles.

This race is undoubtedly a huge commitment, but our 14 five-star reviews speak volumes. The event attracts both elite and novice runners from around the world and all must contend with temperatures in excess of 50 degrees C, and they must carry their food and equipment. Runners are given a water ration and they have a tent to sleep in each night, but they are otherwise expected to be self-sufficient. They will encounter salt plains, desert mountains, ruined towns and sand storms in one of the world's most inhospitable environments. You can view race reviews, articles, tips and interviews via our listings page: https://www.runultra.co.uk/Events/Marathon-Des-Sables

As always, the class of 2018 includes some big names in the world of ultra running. This year's female contenders include 2016 winner Natalia Sedykh, UTWT champ Andrea Huser, Western States 100 winner Magdalena Boulet, and Half MDS Fuerteventura winner Anna Marie Watson. For Huser and Boulet, this is their first desert race, and it will be interesting to see how they get on.

The favourite to win the men's race has to be Rachid El Morabity who won MdS Maroc last year as well as winning MdS Peru. He will face competition from his younger brother Mohamed who came second last year as well as MdS vets Abdelkader El Mouaziz and Aziz El Akad.

RE:Marathon des Sables 2018
It has emerged that Natalia Sedykh received a time penalty of 1 hour for not having a whistle at kit check. This means that Magdalena Boulet is now leading overall. Andrea Huser was amongst the 9 runners who have retired today. It is not yet clear what the circumstances were. Tomorrow's stage is 31.6km with a 10.5 hour cut-off.
