Comrades Marathon
Comrades is widely regarded as one of the most iconic ultras in the world. It is also one of the largest and oldest. It was started in 1921 by Vic Clapham, who wanted to create a living memorial to commemorate the soldiers of the First World War. The first edition involved just 34 runners. This Sunday, the 93rd edition takes place, with entries capped at 20,000 runners.

The race attracts both local and International runners, and is seen as one of South Africa's most popular and inclusive sporting events. Entrants are diverse in their ages, genders, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and their athletic ability.

The race alternates each year between the 'up' route from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, and the 'down' route in the opposite direction. This year's race is the 'down' route and is approximately 89km/55 miles. The course is undulating, and whilst it is run on roads and not technical, it includes 5 big hills which are incredibly tough in the heat and humidity. If anyone breaks the current course records for the down route, they will win R440 000 00.

RE:Comrades Marathon
The 93rd Comrades Marathon is complete. Bongmusa Mthembu won the race for the third time with an 11 minute lead over second placed Joseph Mphuthi. GB's Steven Way pulled it out of the bag when he needed to - he moved from 5th to 3rd place in the final 9km and was only 17 seconds behind Mphuthi.

In the women's race, Ann Ashworth completed her 7th Comrades Marathon with her first win. Her previous best performance was 13th. Great to see hard work and persistence paying off. Gerda Steyn was second lady, and Alexandra Morozova was third.

Our previous runner reviewers have al rated this event very highly. We would love to read you review if you ran this year.
