Marathon des Sables
Just setting up this thread as a place to discuss anything related to the MdS.

This excellent MdS guide from Alice Morrison, contains links to a good portion of our articles on RunUltra relating to the race: http://www.runultra.co.uk/Articles/March-2017/All-you-will-ever-need-to-know-to-run-the-MDS

RE:Marathon des Sables
Brilliant - thanks for all the links. I am planning on a 2019 entry (just a few weeks short of my 70th birthday).

One question that readers may be able to answer. Would I be able to wear my contact lenses throughout the race? Any experience out there?

Thanks.

Hi SABAHRUNNER,

No worries and really cool that you're planning on running it for your 70th!

We've tweeted out your question to see if anyone with direct experience of wearing contacts at the MdS has some useful tips for you.

I haven't ran the MdS, but I do wear contacts. I would think it's 'probably' fine to wear them there. Maybe use dailies and just bring adequate hand cleaning solution. Also make sure to pop them in, inside the tent, so away from the dust outside.

I guess the other option would be to just bring some prescription sunnies along with you. Maybe less hassle? Though you might want to bring a backup pair.

Cheers

RE:Marathon des Sables
Thanks Luke - yes, I guess dailies would work, and would obviate the need to carry lens fluid. Not sure I could use specs as I need varifocals, and the time delay between refocussing distance & close up makes it difficult. Tried it in trail races - not too successful. But I'd be interested to know from previous MDS runners if dust/sand during the day proved a problem for lens wearers.

I've had loads of people telling me I'm too old! I regularly run tough technical 50km trail races in Asia - though not the fastest, I always finish. Came in 2nd veteran a few weeks ago on Day 2 of Race to the Stones. Admittedly, I've never attempted a multi-day race, though looking at the MdS blogs, that's the case with many other competitors. Both my wife & daughter think I can do it - everyone else says I'm mad at my age. Any anecdotal support out there?
