Skyrunner® UK National Series: 3 x 3000m 80km Ultra results and news update

It was a grand weekend in the Lake District. Over 4000m (13,000ft) of ascent was scaled during last weekend’s 3 x 3000m 80km Ultra across three classic Lakeland peaks. It was an important race in the 2016 Skyrunner® National Series (UK) ranking for which Raidlight are the sponsors.

The 80km route was a doughty one, taking in Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Skiddaw. Altitude in the UK is always going to be a problem when compared with what a Skyrunning race would require in France, Spain or Italy but there were plenty of steep short climbs and technical terrain to make up for the lack of metres. By any standards, it was a tough race.

It was a good, strong field and a hotly contended competition. Michael Jones, came in first at 10.25.30 for the men and first woman and 7th overall was Jean Brown from the Clayton-Le-Moors Harriers with 11:43:10.

Unfortunately, as a significant number of race markers were removed by saboteurs and there was no time for the organisers to replace all of them before the runners reached the affected sections, many of the participants had to self-navigate. As a result, Skyrunning UK has concluded that this event did not qualify for Skyrunning status in accordance with Skyrunning UK and ISF expectations, so although results and prize money will stand, there will be no points awarded for the Skyrunning UK Series.
