Craft Active Extreme 2.0 Base layer review

13-Dec-16

Last updated: 17-Aug-18

By James Eacott

Craft are renowned for their base layers, for good reason. They’ve consistently produced amongst the best in the market for runners and cyclists and the Active Extreme 2.0 is further progression towards the perfect base layer.

Features

  • Seamless torso
  • Flatlock seams
  • Ergonomic, 3D fit
  • Double-layered CoolMax Air fabric
  • Super lightweight at 100gsm
  • Breathable underarm mesh
  • Price: UK RRP £30

Pros: What’s to like about the Craft Active Extreme 2.0 Base layer?

Part of the Be Active range, the Extreme 2.0 is “a versatile base layer that creates an optimal microclimate for endurance in fair to cold conditions”. It’s light at just 100gsm (grams per square meter) and fits perfectly: tight enough to be snug but certainly not claustrophobic like many compression tops that many seem to think work as thermal base layers (they don’t).

The Active Exteme 2.0 is made of a dual-layed CoolMax Air fabric. A double layer is commonplace in thermal garments as it enables sweat to wick while keeping the body insulated, but the Active Extreme 2.0 does it more efficiently than any other polyester base layer I’ve worn. The outer layer even has hollow fibres with great insulting properties.

Flatlock seams make it feel seamless which, given its close fit, is very welcome. In the underarm, where most sweat pours, the extra holey mesh allows for greater cooling capacity, rather than running with soggy pits.

I like that it’s long in the body and is thus easily tucked in. It’s not a particularly cool look but no one will know what’s going on underneath your top layer! Tuck in and enjoy protection from the elements creeping up your front or back.

Cons: What’s not so good about the Active Extreme 2.0 base layer

I’m not a massive fan of crew necks. I can see the value in a higher neckline for improved thermoregulation, but it’s just not my preference. It’s a minor point and comes down to personal preference, and it certainly won’t stop me getting a lot of use out of it this winter!

Conclusion

Super for any endurance sports, not solely limited to running. It’s in its element as temperatures drop, but it’ll still do you proud as Spring comes around and the mercury rises.

It’s very difficult for a garment to have the ideal balance between efficient wicking as well as the ability to keep you warm and dry, yet the Extreme 2.0 nails it.

For just £30 (less if you shop around), it’s a bargain and should be a staple in any endurance athlete’s wardrobe.

Other base layers you may want to consider:

You might want to try a wool layer (such as Merino) if you have sensitive skin and want something slightly softer. However for those runners with a wool allergy the CoolMax fabric in the Craft Active Extreme 2.0 base layer might be a good alternative.
