In case you haven’t noticed, there is a whole new genre of nutrition coming at you – we have had meal replacement shakes (think Slimfast), recovery shakes, muscle shakes and protein shakes for a long time now… And I have tried to avoid them all. When you looked at the ingredients, smelled or tasted them, you got flashbacks to those nasty sweets you had in the playground when you were a kid. In the past, they were exclusively made of artificial flavours, preservatives, colourings and a range of E-numbers that would ensure that you were still zinging at going-home time.

So, lets get the debate out of the way, straight away. Gels are Marmite – you either need them or hate them (Nobody can love them right?). Energy gels remain part of the nutrition armoury of many runners, often as a “get out of jail free card”. They typically deliver concentrated sugars/salts/caffeine in a quick hit, they have developed from those nasty tasting sachets that were once like industrial by-products to some more palatable interesting natural flavoured pick me ups.
