I was interested to review the new Nike Zonal AeroShield jacket because it uses a new type of material in some of its key areas which has been designed to be very light and breathable.

The new Raceshell jacket is said to be a “versatile, fully-featured, hooded running jacket designed for really cold, wet conditions”. I have tested it on wet and windy runs in Scotland, where it can be pretty chilly.

We reviewed three of the most popular trail running jackets on the market – the Salomon Bonatti WP, the Inov-8 AT/C HZ and the Craft Devotion. They were tested over a period of three months between August and October predominantly on trail and in all conditions available in the UK during those months.

A lightweight running jacket with taped seams is a must-have for ultra runners, especially if you want to meet the requirements for racing.

This jacket is ultra lightweight and packable. You can easily stuff it into a pocket and take it with you as an emergency warmth layer/windstopper and rain repeller. I tried it out in light rain where it held out very well and then I used a hosepipe to see how it would make out in heavy weather.

The running footwear and apparel specialists inov-8 have created two windproof outer layers for runners. The names are the same, except one is FZ (full zip) and the other is HZ (half zip) jacket. The items have other differences, too. This review is the Race Elite Windshell HZ.

You will have seen waterproof ratings, on jackets for example, of 10,000/10,000 and 20,000/20,000. But what do the rating numbers mean? Manufacturers usually describe the waterproof and breathability of fabrics using two numbers. The first is in millimetres (mm) and is a measure of how waterproof a fabric is.
