I know that is a big claim in the title there and I am immediately going to caveat it with the provisos that every runner and every race are different, but what I am aiming to do is give a comprehensive list of what you might need on a mountain stage race.

When you carry a sleeping bag as a runner, you want it to be light… and I mean really light. However, as our multi day trail runs often take place in rather inhospitable environments, be it mountain, desert or just blooming wet n’ windy UK moorland, it’s critical that the warmth of the sleeping bag is sufficient for the climate in question.

An expensive but, at some point, useful outlay for ultra and marathon runners is a lightweight sleeping bag. It might be an essential kit list item for a multi-day race or something you plan to use on overnights during longer training runs. It needs to be light so that is can be easily carried in a rucksack, but it also needs to be warm so that you can sleep well.

If you are looking for a super lightweight sleeping bag that is ideal for use in the warmer months, when temperatures dip no more than 5ºC, the PHD Minimus range could be for you.
20-Dec-15
Many ultra runners will have a need for a lightweight but warm sleeping bag. This is the only synthetic bag in our testing collection and Mountain Hardwear claim it is “engineered to be the lightest and warmest synthetic bag available”.

Budget, weight, space and warmth are all important factors when choosing a sleeping bag for ultra running or training run overnights. This bag is lightweight and warm, mainly for temperatures similar to UK spring and summer use.
